Reported rapes in the Turks and Caicos Islands have risen by five percent during 2026 compared with the same timeframe last year, making sexual assault the only major offense category to grow even as violent crime drops across the territory. Police Commissioner Fitz Bailey shared the figures on June 23, 2026, while addressing journalists at Police Headquarters in Providenciales.

The increase stands in stark contrast to steep reductions in homicides, attempted homicides, abductions, hold-ups, and weapons-related violations. Bailey presented data showing these categories have all declined markedly.

Still, the Commissioner urged caution when interpreting the sexual assault numbers. He noted that some people lodge complaints but later refuse to assist detectives, which can stall or derail cases. Additionally, he said attackers are frequently familiar to those who report them, adding layers of difficulty to inquiries.

Speaking to the press, Bailey explained that officers must register every complaint that comes in, even when the person filing it subsequently opts out. He added that in many situations, the suspect is an acquaintance of the person making the allegation.

Although Bailey acknowledged that some reports may never lead to charges or court proceedings, he insisted that each one is handled with appropriate gravity and thoroughly looked into.

The situation presents a continuing challenge for both law enforcement and community support organizations as the islands seek to cut violence and shield vulnerable residents.
