The Director of Public Prosecutions has instructed Trinidad and Tobago police to pursue criminal charges over the shooting death of Joshua Samaroo by officers.

Authorities in Trinidad and Tobago have been told to move forward with criminal prosecutions linked to the killing of Joshua Samaroo, who died during a confrontation with law enforcement officers earlier this year.

The country's top prosecutor, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), issued instructions to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) after detectives submitted their findings for review. Police Commissioner Alister Guevarro confirmed the development during a press conference held today.

The fatal encounter occurred on January 20, 2026, near the junction of College Road and Dookiesingh Street in St Augustine. Following an examination of the evidence gathered, the DPP determined that charges should be filed in relation to the circumstances surrounding Samaroo's death.

Guevarro noted that while the green light has been given to press charges, no suspect has been arrested or officially indicted yet. Because the matter is still unfolding, he declined to reveal how many counts may be laid or what specific offences are being considered.

In a follow-up release, the Commissioner stated that detectives now have the guidance they require and he expects to share more information once the next phase of the process is complete.

The police force has pledged to uphold fairness, openness and professional standards throughout the ongoing probe.
