A 34-year-old cleaner was fatally shot inside East Side Plaza on Charlotte Street, Port-of-Spain, on Wednesday afternoon, prompting Housing Minister David Lee to order a review of security at the state-managed facility.

The victim, Kwando Guillium of La Puerta, Diego Martin, had worked at the mall — recently renamed the Port-of-Spain Shopping Complex — for the past three years. According to police, Guillium received a phone call at approximately 3:40 pm. When he stepped out of the kitchen area, two armed men opened fire on him before escaping along George Street.

In a statement following the killing, Minister Lee extended condolences to Guillium's family and described the shooting as "a tragic and senseless act of violence that has left the staff and wider community deeply shaken." The minister said the safety of workers at state-managed facilities remains a top priority and advised staff members seeking counselling to contact Dr Joanne Spence, head of the complex, at 624-7581.

Lee said his ministry is awaiting an official security report on the incident and will work closely with law enforcement to protect tenants and staff. "The ministry will review the findings of the security report and take all necessary measures to strengthen safety protocols across all our facilities," he said.
