Gunfire erupted on St Francois Valley Road in Belmont shortly after dawn on Thursday, leaving three individuals dead — one of them a young person — and injuring a mother along with her own child.

Personnel from the Port of Spain Task Force were dispatched around 8:35 a.m. following reports of loud bangs near Serdraneau Road. People living nearby pointed them toward St Francois Valley Road.

When the officers arrived close to Holder Steps, they came across two adult males stretched out on the asphalt beside a silver Toyota Aqua. By Thursday afternoon, officials had still not released the names of these two men.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service reported that the young victim passed away during medical intervention. Meanwhile, the adult woman hurt in the attack continued to receive hospital care.

Suzette Martin, the Deputy Commissioner, travelled to the location and voiced alarm over the tragedy's effect on the neighbourhood and the nation at large. She extended sympathies to relatives mourning their losses and gave assurances that policing levels would be boosted in troubled zones.

Martin declared that violent acts harming blameless members of the public — minors especially — would trigger an unwavering and sustained reaction from law enforcement. She called on citizens to grant detectives the necessary room to pursue a complete inquiry.
