Driver arrested after police shooting in Santa Cruz; gun, cannabis seized
A man was arrested following a police-involved shooting in Santa Cruz on Sunday night. Officers seized a Glock pistol, 34 rounds, and 146 cannabis plants.

One man is in police custody and a Glock pistol along with 146 cannabis plants have been seized following a shooting incident in the Pax Vale area of Santa Cruz late Sunday night, guardian.co.tt reports.
Officers from the North Eastern Division were on mobile patrol at around 10:45 pm on 28 June 2026 when they received a tip about a suspicious vehicle in the district. On arriving at the scene, the vehicle allegedly sped away, prompting a pursuit with sirens and emergency lights activated.
The chase ended on Positive Street, where an armed occupant exited the rear of the vehicle and fired two shots at the pursuing police unit. In keeping with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Use of Force Policy, an officer returned fire. The suspect then fled into an empty parcel of land and escaped.
Officers approached the now-abandoned vehicle and detained the driver without further incident.
A search of the trunk uncovered 146 cannabis plants packed inside three cardboard boxes. Investigators also recovered a Glock pistol fitted with two magazines containing 34 rounds of 9mm ammunition. The detained suspect produced a Firearm User's Licence (FUL) booklet for the weapon.
Subsequent enquiries led officers to the suspect's home, where an additional quantity of ammunition not listed in the FUL booklet was allegedly found, along with a further quantity of cannabis.
Police confirmed that investigations remain ongoing. Authorities are working to establish the identity and whereabouts of the armed occupant who escaped, as well as the full extent of the alleged criminal activity linked to the seized items. Forensic analysis of the recovered firearms evidence and drugs is expected to inform any additional charges.
The North Eastern Division reiterated its commitment to combating firearms and narcotics trafficking, stating that patrols and intelligence-led operations will continue. Members of the public were urged to report suspicious activity as the investigation progresses.
