Police in Trinidad and Tobago are investigating after 56 bodies, the majority of them infants, were discovered abandoned at a cemetery in Cumuto.

A grim discovery has prompted a major police probe in Trinidad and Tobago after fifty-six corpses were found discarded at a burial ground in Cumuto, located about forty kilometres from the capital.

The country's police force revealed on Saturday that fifty of the recovered remains belonged to babies, while the remaining six were grown individuals—four males and two females. Investigators noted that at least one woman and one man among the adults had already undergone post-mortem procedures, and each adult corpse bore tags commonly used by morgues.

Initial police assessments suggest the case involves the unlawful abandonment of unclaimed bodies. Specialists are conducting further forensic work to establish the origin of the remains and identify any legal or procedural violations.

Following the find, officers from the Cumuto station secured the location and launched a forensic review. Additional expert teams, including homicide investigators, were dispatched to support the effort.

Commissioner Allister Guevarro described the scene as profoundly troubling and recognised the distress it would cause among families and the broader population. He assured the public that the police are pursuing the case with both urgency and care, stressing that every body deserves dignified and lawful treatment. He warned that any person or organisation found negligent in this duty would face full consequences.

Under local law, the improper dumping of human remains constitutes a criminal offence.
