Man Shot Dead by IATF Officers in Port of Spain After Running Gun Battle

IATF kills Laventille man after gun battle in east Port of Spain

A 28-year-old man is dead and two firearms have been recovered after a running gun battle between Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) officers and a group of men in Port of Spain late on September 18, newsday.co.tt reports.

The deceased has been identified as Anderson "Elmo" Rodriguez of Beverly Hills, Laventille. Rodriguez was fatally shot near the St Paul Street Multi-Purpose Complex after firing on officers multiple times during a chase through the streets of east Port of Spain.

According to police, officers on patrol around 11.30 pm spotted a silver Hyundai Elantra and a gold Nissan Tiida travelling in convoy along St Paul Street. When the vehicles were stopped, the Tiida reversed out rapidly.

One of its occupants exited on Rodney Street, aimed a rifle at the officers and fled when police discharged their weapons. The Tiida continued down the street before stopping near the back gate of the St Paul Street Complex.

The driver stepped out and opened fire on the officers. Police returned fire. The man scrambled over the gate, dropping a gun as he did so. Once inside the yard, he turned and pointed a second weapon at the approaching officers, who fired again. Rodriguez was struck and fell to the ground.

He was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators subsequently recovered a revolver loaded with six rounds and a pistol fitted with a loaded magazine at the scene. Checks on the Tiida revealed it was bearing false number plates and had been stolen during a violent robbery in Central Trinidad on August 27.

The IATF and the Homicide Bureau are continuing their inquiries. A search remains ongoing for Rodriguez's accomplices.
