A combined team from Trinidad and Tobago's police and military detained seven individuals during a dawn operation in Oropune Gardens, Piarco, on Wednesday.

The sweep ran from 4 a.m. to roughly 6:45 a.m., according to an official statement issued by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service. Those taken into custody were held under Preventative Detention Orders.

Law enforcement described the effort as intelligence-driven and said personnel from several branches of both the Police Service and the Defence Force took part. Overseeing the mission were Commissioner Allister Guevarro, Deputy Commissioner of Operations Suzette Martin, Senior Superintendent Gift of the North Central Division, and Lieutenant Commander Sheldon Dugan of the Defence Force.

Among the groups involved were the DCP Operations Team, the Guard and Emergency Branch, the Inter-Agency Task Force, the North Central Gang Unit, Arouca CID, Tunapuna CID, and Defence Force members.

Officials said the sweep is part of a wider push to go after offenders and break up criminal operations in the Northern Division. Coordinated actions of this kind are reportedly being staged across the nation in an effort to take apart illegal networks and improve public safety.

The identities of the seven detainees were not made public, and police did not specify what crimes are under investigation. No information was given about whether firearms, ammunition, or other materials were recovered.

The Police Service indicated that intelligence-based operations will keep playing a central role in its approach to combating crime and pursuing suspects uncovered by investigations. Further joint actions with the Defence Force are planned for multiple divisions as authorities work to curb criminal and gang-related conduct in communities throughout Trinidad and Tobago.
