A lunchtime shooting on Mariquite Street in Port of Spain on April 19 claimed one man's life and left a second victim injured, newsday.co.tt reports.

A group of men had been liming at the corner of Mariquite Street and Upper Duke Street when gunmen approached on foot and opened fire. The attackers then fled in a waiting burgundy-coloured vehicle.

A resident transported the two wounded men to the Port of Spain General Hospital, according to an eyewitness who spoke to Newsday. The resident's vehicle sustained bullet holes during the incident.

Police have classified the shooting as gang-related. Scores of bystanders were seen fleeing the area when the gunfire erupted.

Residents in the surrounding streets described the chaos that followed. A woman on Prince Street told Newsday she immediately ran, saying the shots "sounded like it was coming from right on Frederick Street." Two women at the KFC on Charlotte Street said they rushed inside the outlet, believing the gunfire was unfolding on their block.

Investigators and police were photographed questioning a local at the crime scene, where blood remained visible on the ground following the attack.
