The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service has pushed back against suggestions that anything improper occurred during a search at the Belmont Police Station on Tuesday, when weapons and ammunition were uncovered inside a locked room.

ASP Owie Russell, who serves as the service's public information officer, told reporters at the weekly briefing held at the Police Administration Building in Port-of-Spain that no specialist unit had carried out a raid. He also refuted rumours that colleagues had been detained or that warrants had been served at officers' homes.

Russell explained that on July 6, the service learned that a room at the station — previously a gym and later turned into an office — had been secured and the key could not be found. After an extensive search, the key was recovered and personnel entered the space.

They found eight guns and rounds of ammunition that had been logged as evidence. Russell noted that enquiries are still underway to establish which cases the seized items belong to and who filed the related complaints.

He stressed that no member of the force is being held over the discovery, no residential searches have been conducted, and nobody is considered a suspect at this stage.

Russell additionally knocked down social media chatter suggesting a sergeant from the station was fleeing authorities. He clarified that the non-commissioned officer was simply on approved leave.
