The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has rejected claims that officers were taken into custody following the discovery of weapons inside a locked room at the Belmont Police Station earlier this week.

During a weekly media briefing held at the Police Administration Building in Port-of-Spain, Public Information Officer ASP Owie Russell dismissed reports that a specialist police unit had raided the station. He also denied that search warrants had been carried out at the homes of officers assigned to the facility.

According to Russell, police received information on July 6 about a room that had originally served as a gym before being converted into an office. The space had been locked and the key could not be found at first. A thorough search eventually located the key, allowing officers to enter.

Inside, personnel found eight firearms and ammunition that had been logged as exhibits. Russell stated that inquiries are ongoing to identify the complainants and the specific cases linked to the recovered items.

He emphasized that no officer is currently in custody in connection with the discovery. Additionally, no search warrants have been executed at any officer's residence, and no member of the force is presently considered a suspect.

Russell also addressed rumors circulating on social media suggesting that a sergeant stationed at Belmont was on the run. He clarified that the officer in question had been granted approved vacation leave.
