Officers in central Trinidad have detained two males and confiscated a pistol after a shopkeeper was robbed at gunpoint in Edinburgh 500 on Monday.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service stated that personnel attached to the Central Division Task Force (Area North) reacted to a report of robbery with aggravation at a commercial property on La Clave Street, Chaguanas. The event took place just after midday.

Enquiries indicate that the duo reached the outlet in a silver Toyota Aqua. One stayed in the driver’s seat while his accomplice, carrying a firearm, walked in and demanded money.

The bandit reportedly let off two rounds before taking cash from the operator. The pair then drove off in the same sedan.

A multi-unit police effort led to the car being stopped on Madhoo Trace, Carlsen Field, not long afterwards. Inside, investigators found a black semi-automatic weapon containing ten 9 mm cartridges. They also picked up a pair of number plates and various garments suspected of being worn during the heist.

Both individuals were placed under arrest and are being questioned as the probe proceeds.

Law enforcement officials described the rapid reaction as part of wider initiatives to combat violent street crime and strip neighbourhoods of unlicensed weapons.
