A 43-year-old American tourist was found fatally stabbed in the fishing village of Castara on the island of Tobago late Wednesday night, globalnews.ca reports. The victim, identified as Christopher Brown, a builder from Silverthorne, Colorado, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, Brown had dinner and drinks with friends in Castara on Wednesday evening. He then left the group, telling them he intended to buy marijuana. Shortly after 10:30 p.m. local time, officers responded to reports of an unresponsive man in the area. Investigators found several wounds on Brown's body, including a metal object protruding from his back.
Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro confirmed on Thursday that a suspect had been taken into custody. "I can confirm that a suspect is currently in custody," Guevarro told The Associated Press, without disclosing further details about the individual. The motive for the killing remains under investigation.
Authorities have not indicated whether Brown was on vacation at the time of his death or provided details on when he arrived on the island.
Tobago's Division of Tourism, Culture, Antiquities and Transportation condemned the attack, describing it as "the first such act of violence" in Castara. In a media release, the division stated it was "profoundly saddened and deeply disturbed by the tragic murder of a foreign national in the peaceful community of Castara."
Division secretary Tashia Burris added: "We are devastated by this loss and unequivocally condemn this senseless act. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and stand firm in our commitment to ensuring that Tobago remains a safe, peaceful and welcoming destination for all who visit our shores."
The division also confirmed that visitor trauma response protocols had been activated to support Brown's family on the island, and pledged to strengthen safety measures and enhance visitor protection across Tobago.
The killing comes amid a broader security crisis in Trinidad and Tobago. The twin-island nation has recorded more than 330 homicides so far this year, according to police statistics. A state of emergency, implemented in July, remains in effect. Authorities introduced the measure after accusing a criminal network operating inside the country's prisons of plotting to assassinate key government officials and target public institutions.
Regional tensions have also added to the security environment. The U.S. Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago warned American citizens in October to avoid all U.S. government facilities in the country, citing a "heightened state of alert." The warning came amid growing friction between the United States and Venezuela following deadly U.S. military strikes in Caribbean waters against suspected drug traffickers. Venezuela lies just miles from Trinidad's coastline, and residents of at least one coastal community are mourning the disappearance of two local fishermen believed to have been killed in a U.S. strike that same month.
