Authorities in Trinidad and Tobago are examining the circumstances surrounding the death of a visitor from the United States who was discovered with fatal injuries on the smaller of the two islands.
The victim, 43-year-old Christopher Brown, worked in construction and resided in Silverthorne, Colorado. According to WECT, a police document states that Brown spent Wednesday night eating and drinking with acquaintances in Castara, a coastal settlement on Tobago known for its fishing heritage. He later told the group he was leaving to acquire cannabis.
Around half past ten in the evening, law enforcement personnel arrived at the location after receiving word that Brown was lying motionless. Medical personnel subsequently confirmed he had died there.
Detectives suspect the visitor met his end through stabbing. His corpse displayed numerous injuries, and an elongated metallic item was seen sticking out from his back. The reason behind the attack has yet to be established.
Allister Guevarro, who heads the national police force, informed The Associated Press the following afternoon that someone is being held in relation to the matter.
The local tourism bureau expressed strong disapproval of the violence, noting that this type of incident had never before occurred in the community, which it described as secure and hospitable toward guests.
Officials did not reveal Brown’s purpose for being on the island or the date of his arrival.
The twin-island Caribbean nation has already surpassed 330 killings this calendar year, figures from the security services show. Since July, the government has maintained extraordinary emergency powers nationwide, accusing imprisoned criminal factions of scheming to murder high-ranking state figures and assault key infrastructure.
