Beach ceremony in Anguilla marks one year since Shawn Seesahai's machete murder

The family of Shawn Seesahai held a sunset balloon release on his favourite Anguilla beach, one year after the 19-year-old was killed in Wolverhampton.

The parents of Shawn Seesahai — the 19-year-old killed in an unprovoked machete attack in a Wolverhampton park last November — gathered on his favourite beach in Anguilla to mark the first anniversary of his death, bbc.com reports.

Maneshwary and Suresh Seesahai released balloons into the evening sky during the sunset ceremony, held in his native Caribbean island. Seesahai had travelled to the UK from Anguilla six months before his death, seeking treatment for an eye condition. He was living in Handsworth, Birmingham, and hoped to study engineering.

He was with friends in Wolverhampton when he was struck with a machete to his back, legs and skull and also beaten. He died from a stab wound to the back that penetrated his lungs and heart and almost cut through his entire torso.

Two boys — aged 12 at the time of the killing, now 13 — were detained for a minimum of eight years and six months in September. They cannot be identified because of their ages. Mrs Justice Tipples, the trial judge, said it was not clear which boy struck the fatal blow but found they had acted together.

The pair are the youngest convicted killers in England since Robert Thompson and Jon Venables murdered two-year-old James Bulger in 1993.

Earlier this month it emerged their sentences had been referred to the Court of Appeal after concerns were raised that the tariffs were too lenient.
