Wincanton driver convicted after overtaking unmarked police car on A30

A 21-year-old man from Wincanton has been handed a suspended custodial sentence after overtaking an unmarked police car while driving without a licence, blackmorevale.net reports.

Jake King, of Maunder Close, was tailgating the unmarked vehicle on the A30 near Ludwell, close to Shaftesbury, on Saturday 27 September. Driving a black Audi, he overtook the car in a 30mph zone, exceeding the speed limit.

When officers pulled King over, he initially refused to give his details. He then said: "Are we really going to do this?" before admitting he held no driving licence and was already disqualified from driving. He also acknowledged the vehicle was displaying false registration plates.

A Stanley knife was found on the driver's seat. The Audi was further declared unroadworthy due to exposed cord on both front tyres and was seized by police.

PC Hughes from the County LPTT said King had driven "very recklessly" by overtaking a marked law enforcement vehicle in a restricted speed zone, adding that he was also found in possession of a knife. "There is no place for this type of criminality in Wiltshire and we will continue to be robust with those found to be breaking the law," Hughes said.

King appeared before Swindon Magistrates' Court on Monday 29 September, where he pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, possession of a bladed article, and forging a registration document. He was sentenced to five months in custody, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to complete 30 rehabilitation activity days.
