Multiple pedestrians were "projected into the air" after a car drove through a red light at a signal-controlled crossing in west London, causing serious injuries including broken facial bones and a broken pelvis, bbc.co.uk reports.

Ahmed Timir, 34, of Grange Park, Ealing, is alleged to have driven a white Seat Leon through a pedestrian crossing on Ealing Broadway on Saturday while the traffic light was red and a large number of pedestrians were lawfully crossing. Prosecuting counsel Kate Fassam-Wright told the court that several victims were thrown into the air by the impact.

Timir, who was born in Somalia, is charged with five counts of attempted murder, dangerous driving, two counts of failing to stop, failing to provide a breath specimen for analysis, and three counts of criminal damage.

Following the initial collision, the defendant is alleged to have continued driving before crashing into stationary vehicles at a nearby junction, including a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Prius. A witness subsequently reported that a white vehicle had struck his car at the junction of Hanger Lane and Uxbridge Road.

The vehicle was eventually stopped on Warwick Road. Emergency services attended shortly after the incident and treated multiple casualties. Timir was located and arrested later that same day, the prosecution said.

Counter Terrorism Policing London conducted initial inquiries into the incident, but the case is not being treated as terrorism.

Timir appeared at Willesden Magistrates' Court to face the charges and was remanded into custody. He is due to appear at the Old Bailey on 27 July.
