EuroMillions winner dies four days after suspected hit-and-run in Essex

Anthony Canty, a water supply worker from Maldon who won £1m in a EuroMillions draw in May 2020, has died following a suspected hit-and-run collision in Tiptree, Essex, The Guardian UK reports.

Officers were called to a collision between a cyclist and a black Ford Ka on Maldon Road at 6.30am on 21 May. Canty, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital in a serious condition and died four days later, Essex police said.

An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, and failing to stop at the scene. He remains under investigation as inquiries continue. The suspect allegedly fled the scene after the impact.

Canty was known beyond his lottery win. In April 2020, during the first Covid-19 lockdown, he gave CPR to a police officer who collapsed with a heart attack while they were on a bus together. The officer was airlifted to hospital and spent five days in intensive care. Canty said he stayed in contact with the officer's partner throughout the hospital stay, dropped off fruit and flowers, and kept in touch after the officer recovered.

Weeks after that incident, in May 2020, Canty won the £1m EuroMillions prize with his partner Katie Sullivan. Despite the win, he had vowed not to give up his job as a key worker.

Essex police have appealed for witnesses and are asking anyone who saw a black Ford Ka in the Tiptree area around 6.30am on 21 May to come forward. Anyone with CCTV footage, dashcam recordings or other relevant material has been encouraged to contact Essex police directly.
