French national accused of killing toddler daughter in Surrey

A 31-year-old French national has appeared in court charged with murdering his two-year-old daughter, bbc.com reports.

Kevin Kerjean, born in the Central African Republic, faced Guildford Crown Court via video-link from HMP Wandsworth on Thursday, speaking through an interpreter to confirm his name. He is also charged with the rape and sexual assault of a girl under the age of 13.

Surrey Police confirmed that Kerjean is the father of a child found dead at a property on Pyrcroft Road in Chertsey on Thursday evening. The Crown Prosecution Service later identified the victim as Assia Kerjean.

In a statement, the force said: "We can confirm that the victim was the daughter of Kevin Kerjean."

A police spokesperson said the Home Office confirmed Kerjean legally entered the UK and applied for EU Settled Status in December 2020. He was granted leave to remain in March 2021 and received an extension permitting him to stay until March 2031.

Kerjean was remanded in custody until the next hearing at Guildford Crown Court on 14 September.
