Crossbow attack at University of Surrey leaves man in serious condition

A man in his fifties was shot with a crossbow on the University of Surrey campus in Guildford. A 21-year-old former student, a Saudi national, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

A man in his fifties is in a serious condition in hospital after being shot with a crossbow at the University of Surrey, The Independent reports.

Surrey Police were called to Manor Park Student Village in Guildford at around 10am on Thursday. The University of Surrey confirmed that a member of its campus safety team had been "seriously injured" in the attack.

A 21-year-old former student at the university, described as a Saudi national, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody. The victim's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.

Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen said investigators are not seeking any further suspects. "The suspect was detained at the scene shortly after the incident and an investigation is now underway to establish the circumstances of the assault," he said. Groenen added that he understood the incident "will cause concern amongst our local communities" but sought to reassure residents that there is no wider threat.

Emergency services remained on the scene following the attack. Access to the Royal Surrey County Hospital is unaffected, police confirmed.
