A 28-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Montserrat Martorell in Londonderry, bbc.co.uk reports. He also faces charges of arson with intent to endanger life and a number of other serious offences.

The body of Ms Martorell, 65, was discovered in a flat on Harvey Street at around 04:15 BST on Saturday, following a fire at the property. Police had initially been unable to identify her.

The Spanish woman had been living in Derry at the time of her death. Officers described the attack as "horrific and sustained", with Ms Martorell having sustained multiple injuries.

On Wednesday, police were granted an additional 18 hours to question the suspect at a closed court hearing at Londonderry Magistrates' Court. The man is now due to appear before the same court on Thursday.
