North Belfast attempted murder case referred to Crown Court

A 30-year-old man charged with attempted murder in North Belfast has been remanded in custody and told his case will be sent to the Crown Court, breakingnews.ie reports.

Hadi Alodid, of Duncairn Avenue in Belfast, appeared before Belfast Magistrates' Court by videolink on Wednesday. He is charged with the attempted murder of Stephen Ogilvie, who previously lost his left eye and sustained deep lacerations to his head, face and back in the attack. The incident triggered serious disorder across several areas of Northern Ireland.

Alodid also faces charges of threatening to kill an NHS radiographer and possession of a knife.

During Wednesday's hearing, the court noted that requests for outstanding evidence — including witness statements and medical records — had been made. A four-week adjournment was granted to allow time for those materials to be gathered.

The magistrate, addressing Alodid through an Arabic interpreter, told him the charges were serious and advised him to seek legal representation. He was informed that a Crown Court date is expected to be set within four weeks.

When asked through the interpreter if he wished to respond, Alodid shook his head.

The PSNI said earlier this week that Alodid may be from Chad, rather than Sudan as had previously been believed.

He was remanded in custody until 5 August.
