A man was arrested on suspicion of firearm possession after threatening people on Upper Parliament Street in Toxteth. Around 10 police cars attended the scene.

Armed officers descended on Upper Parliament Street in Toxteth, Liverpool, on Wednesday evening after reports that a man had threatened a group of people with what appeared to be a gun, liverpoolecho.co.uk reports.

Merseyside Police were contacted shortly after 8.45pm following reports of an incident outside a property on the busy road, near the African Caribbean Centre. Officers closed the street, bringing traffic to a standstill and leaving buses stranded within the police cordon.

One resident told reporters that a man had emerged from a house and confronted a group of young people. "There was a gang of kids and a man came out of a house and threatened them with something that looked like a gun," the resident said. "I think he thought they were messing around with fireworks."

A second resident, living close to the scene, said she became aware of the incident after hearing "a commotion" before the police arrived. "I was just in my flat and then I heard all these sirens," she said. "I looked out the window and there were around 10 police cars. They blocked off the road for around 10 minutes and it all died down then."

Officers were seen searching the street with torches and entering and leaving nearby properties as the investigation unfolded.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson confirmed that a man had been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and taken into custody. No weapon was located and enquiries remain ongoing. The road was temporarily closed but has since been reopened.
