Portuguese man sentenced to 10 years for rape in Leamington
Alexandre Jesus, 23, from the district of Aveiro, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by an English court after repeatedly raping a woman at her home in Leamington in March 2024. An additional four years of suspended sentence was added to the main sentence, according to cmjornal.pt.
The sentence was passed on Wednesday at Warwick court, on the outskirts of Coventry. The trial lasted five days, after which the jury unanimously found him guilty of rape and violence.
Jesus, who was living in Leamington at the time of the offences, pleaded not guilty throughout the proceedings and claimed that everything was an invention by the victim. The court also ordered that his name be registered on the British sex offenders register, where it will remain for the rest of his life.
Inspector Donna Parry, who led the investigation, spoke after the sentence was read to praise the victim. "Your bravery in coming forward and your commitment to the investigation are remarkable," Parry said. "Although we know that no sentence can undo the harm that was done to you, I hope it will help you to rebuild your life," she added.
The inspector was also forthright in her characterisation of the crimes: "Jesus took advantage of a woman in her own home and committed one of the most devastating crimes imaginable."
