The incident unfolded near Peerless and Damman streets, in the vicinity of Interstate 94. Sheriff Raphael Washington explained that the officer was sitting in the covert vehicle when someone opened fire. The car was hit, but the deputy escaped injury.
At that moment, the officer had been gathering intelligence as part of a probe into a prior act of violence. Following the gunfire, police located and arrested one person and found a weapon.
Investigators are still trying to locate two other people thought to be involved in the shooting. Sheriff Washington emphasized that, despite the search for additional suspects, there is no broader danger to residents.
