One person was killed and three others wounded Wednesday night when a gunman opened fire outside Fairfield High School's Schafer Stadium in Northern California, where Sem Yeto High School had just held its commencement ceremony, according to NY Post Metro.

The shooting broke out shortly after 8 p.m., after the graduation had already concluded. Suisun City Mayor Alma Hernandez announced on social media that three people had been shot and described an active shooter situation at the stadium. The shooter had not been apprehended as of Wednesday night.

One attendee said the gunfire erupted in the parking lot as families and graduates had gathered to take photos following the ceremony. A father who had accompanied his daughter to support a graduating friend said he heard shots and immediately ran from the scene.

Fairfield Police officer Michelle Belyea described the scene in stark terms. "Kind of traumatized for everyone here who had to witness it. It's outrageous," Belyea said. "It's sad. Prayers for everyone affected by it. I'm so sorry you had to go through that."

The Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District confirmed that law enforcement responded to the campus. "Law enforcement is on campus, and as this is an active investigation we have no additional information to share at this time," a district spokesperson said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the individuals affected and as soon as we have more details we will share that with you."

Footage from a livestream reviewed by television station KCRA 3 showed the graduation ceremony itself and did not appear to capture any gunfire during the event.

Later Wednesday night, Hernandez posted again on social media that an active shooting chase was underway in Fairfield, though she offered no further details. Police had not released additional information as the investigation remained ongoing.
