A young man armed with a firearm stormed into a northern California reading room on Monday evening, leaving two people dead and a youngster wounded before police captured him.

Bradley Scott Sayer, aged 18 and living in the same municipality, was identified as the perpetrator by Chico police. Detectives revealed the suspect allegedly harbored ambitions of carrying out a bloodbath reminiscent of the 1999 Colorado school atrocity.

Gunshots rang out around 5:12 p.m. inside the Butte County Library branch on Sherman Avenue. Emergency dispatchers fielded a call where shots and panicked shrieks were audible on the line. Patrol cars arrived within moments, with some personnel rushing in through the main entrance while the assailant slipped out the back, straight into a cordon that had been set up. He surrendered without resistance.

Those slain were later identified during a county board meeting as Jacob Hull, 46, a fellow Chico inhabitant, and a septuagenarian gentleman whose next of kin law enforcement has yet to track down. A child suffered wounds that were not critical and received care at a nearby medical center.

Investigators believe the teenager operated solo and lacked any prior connection to the people he shot or the institution itself. In the aftermath, displaced visitors assembled at a local house of worship for reunification with loved ones.

Traffic along First Avenue was halted between Sheridan and Arbutus roads as agencies at multiple levels assisted with the inquiry.

The county administration expressed sorrow toward all affected. Every branch of the Butte County Library network remained shuttered the next day.

The district attorney's office stated Sayer will be formally charged during a Thursday afternoon court session.
