Costa Mesa woman shot dead after work shift; suspect known to victim

A 20-year-old woman was fatally shot on a sidewalk in Costa Mesa late Monday night, abc7.com reports. The suspect, who authorities believe was known to the victim, has not yet been apprehended.

Multiple callers reported the shooting shortly after 11 p.m. in the 1500 block of Lukup Lane, a residential area between Harbor Boulevard and the Costa Mesa Country Club. Officers arrived to find the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Costa Mesa firefighters transported her to a hospital, where she died.

Police identified the victim as Montserrat "Monse" Colorado.

A woman who worked alongside Colorado told abc7.com that she had just finished her shift as a home health-care worker when she was shot outside the home where she had been working. "Her shift ended at 11 p.m. and the shooting happened as she was waiting to be picked up," the colleague said, declining to appear on camera.

The colleague said witnesses saw someone run up to Colorado, shoot her multiple times and flee on foot. She also noted that Colorado's stepfather had been parked across the street at the time. "He could have seen the whole thing," she said.

"She was loving. Very easy to get along with, but she trusted everybody too fast," the coworker added.

The Costa Mesa Police Department stated that "it appears the victim was known to the suspect, who is still outstanding." No motive has been established.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Stocking at 714-754-5392 or Sergeant Jacobi at 714-754-5352.
