USA: Trial begins for murder of Charlie Kirk

The trial of Tyler Robinson, the 23-year-old accused of murdering Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, began on Monday at a courthouse in Utah.

Kirk was shot dead in September 2025 during an event at Utah Valley University. The accused faces the possibility of the death penalty if convicted.

Monday marked the first of five days of preliminary hearings, during which prosecutors presented evidence against Robinson. It was also the first time Erica Kirk, Charlie's widow and mother of two, came face-to-face with the man accused of killing her husband.

After hours of testimony, Erica Kirk left the courtroom shortly before prosecutors showed three videos capturing the moment her 31-year-old husband was fatally shot in the throat.

The defendant appeared in a grey suit and handcuffs. He took notes at various points while his attorneys questioned witnesses. The proceedings aim to establish whether sufficient evidence exists to proceed to trial.

The videos shown on Monday were not permitted to be broadcast by media outlets, as Robinson's lawyers argued that the particularly graphic images of Kirk's death could influence potential jurors.

Charlie Kirk's mother, Cathryn Kirk, held a packet of tissues and kept her head down while listening to the testimony. The judge, Tony Graf, noted that those who had left the courtroom could return when the session resumed.

Security measures were extremely tight, with approximately six SWAT officers inside the courtroom and additional officers positioned on the building's roof.

Robinson's defense had requested that television cameras be banned from the courtroom, arguing that continuous media coverage would negatively affect public opinion — and potential jurors — against their client before the trial even began.

The defense attorneys also filed objections to every piece of evidence presented by the prosecution. Only one objection was accepted, regarding a video that appeared to have been edited.

Charlie Kirk's parents were present in court, as were close friends including Donald Trump Jr. with his wife Bettina Anderson, and Jack Posobiec.

In a statement before the proceedings began, Erica Kirk emphasized that her pain remains unbearable. "We remain deeply grateful for the support, prayers, and kindness we have received. This solidarity kept us standing in the darkest days of our lives."

"Out of respect for the judicial process, we will not make further statements at this time. We ask that you continue to respect our privacy as we face this proceeding and our terrible grief," the family concluded.
