Chinese businessman Guo Wengui has been sentenced to 30 years in prison by a New York court for defrauding thousands of people of more than $1 billion.

A court in New York has handed down a 30-year prison sentence to Chinese businessman Guo Wengui for running a massive fraud scheme. Prosecutors said he swindled thousands of victims out of more than one billion dollars, equivalent to roughly 876 million euros.

Guo had been living in the United States in self-imposed exile prior to his conviction.
