An unsolved murder of a traveling salesman at a US hotel, committed 41 years ago, has finally been cracked. An Ohio man has been charged with the fatal robbery after investigators linked him to evidence discovered hundreds of kilometers from the crime scene.

Randy McAllister was indicted by a grand jury last week for the death of John Goren, who was killed at a Holiday Inn that has since been demolished, on October 16, 1985, according to the Warren County prosecutor.

Goren, an employee of an auto parts company, was in the area for business meetings when he was found dead inside his room the following morning. Personal belongings and his vehicle were missing from the crime scene.

Initial investigators hit a dead end due to a lack of sufficient evidence, despite following numerous leads and tips. Some of the stolen items were found discarded behind a restaurant in Dalton, Georgia — approximately 644 kilometers away — a few days after the murder. The victim's car was later located in Redington Beach, Florida.

Three men from South Carolina had been considered suspects in Goren's murder, but charges against them were later dropped after lie detector tests confirmed their alibis.

The investigation remained stagnant for decades until authorities reopened the case in 2019 and began re-examining the evidence. Some recovered items were sent to forensic laboratories for analysis, and McAllister, along with a now-deceased accomplice, emerged as suspects.

Police had been investigating the case since 2021 and subsequently presented the evidence to a grand jury, which indicted McAllister last week. The accused is being held at the Warren County jail, facing charges of aggravated murder and murder.
