A 27-year-old campaign volunteer was arrested in Brooklyn after allegedly punching and beating a 98-year-old man with a broomstick and metal chair during a dispute over political flyers.

A 27-year-old campaign worker was arrested in Brooklyn after allegedly assaulting a 98-year-old man with a broomstick and metal chair during a dispute over campaign leaflets, the NY Post Metro reports.

Tashara Abel was stuffing reelection flyers into mailboxes in the lobby of a building at Maple Street and Rogers Avenue in Prospect Lefferts Gardens when the elderly man entered around 4 p.m. Thursday, according to police.

The two became involved in a dispute over the handouts for Anthony Beckford, a Democratic Socialists of America member and New York State Committee Member running in the June 23 primary for re-election as a Democratic district leader.

Abel allegedly punched and kicked the man repeatedly before striking him with a broomstick and metal chair, police said. The victim was treated at the scene for minor head injuries and declined further hospital care.

Abel was charged with three counts of assault, burglary, and criminal possession of a weapon. Her arraignment was pending as of Saturday. A police source said she has no prior arrests.

Beckford issued a statement saying his campaign was reviewing the incident. "I am currently reviewing the situation to better understand the full circumstances, and I have personally reached out to the voter involved to ensure he is doing well and has the support he needs," the statement, shared with CBS NY, read.

"While volunteers may operate independently, anyone associated with my campaign is expected to conduct themselves with respect and professionalism at all times, and if it is determined that an individual connected to my campaign acted inappropriately, appropriate action will be taken," Beckford added.

The candidate said his campaign would cooperate with authorities as needed and remains committed to "maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all residents."
