An officer from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot and killed a Mexican national during an early-morning confrontation involving federal agents, the Department of Homeland Security announced on Tuesday.

The deceased man, identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, was allegedly in the United States without legal authorization. According to the department's statement posted on X, he refused to comply with officers' commands while inside his vehicle. Officials claim he first rammed into an agents' vehicle and then attempted to strike one of the officers with his car. The ICE agent responded by discharging his weapon.

Emergency responders transported the driver to a hospital, where he later died from wounds sustained in the shooting. The Department of Homeland Security stated it has opened an internal investigation into the use of deadly force. Separately, the FBI field office in Houston is conducting an inquiry into the alleged attack on a federal officer.

The ministry did not specify why Salgado Araujo was allegedly residing in the country unlawfully. Independent verification of the official account was not immediately available.

Several witnesses captured photographs and video footage of the incident, NBC News reported. The presence of civilian recordings has drawn attention to the case, particularly in light of previous incidents where official statements conflicted with video evidence. In January, federal agents shot and killed U.S. citizens Renée Good and Alex Prettia during separate operations, sparking widespread public outrage across the country.
