A 48-year-old man gunned down his 24-year-old girlfriend and her neighbor in a Pomona, California apartment complex on June 18, after the young woman told him she was leaving him.

Local police identified the female victim as Veronica Lopez. Her partner, Robert Galtman, allegedly shot both Lopez and a neighbor in the hallway of the residential building. Officers responded to the scene after receiving multiple emergency calls about gunfire inside the complex.

When patrol units arrived, they found the two wounded individuals lying in the corridor. Los Angeles County firefighters attempted to revive both victims, but the efforts failed and both were pronounced dead, according to a police spokesperson.

Galtman fled the area by car and led officers on a highway chase. Law enforcement apprehended him several hours after the killings. Authorities have not disclosed how or why the neighbor became involved in the incident.

Prior to the shooting, Lopez and Galtman had been involved in a heated argument. The woman had decided to end their relationship, and Galtman reportedly drew his firearm to prevent her from leaving the apartment.

Lopez's relatives told the media that the couple had been together for two years. Family members said Galtman had repeatedly abused Lopez and had begged her on multiple occasions to leave him.

"I think she was finally ready to actually leave him. That's why this whole thing happened," Lopez's mother told reporters.
