An armed man was taken into custody after approaching a security checkpoint near the United States Capitol building in Washington, D.C. Officers noticed a firearm inside his vehicle and responded immediately by blocking the gates.

Footage published by American media shows officers pointing weapons at the suspect, who exited a gray SUV on their orders. Capitol security personnel then approached from behind and placed him in handcuffs.

The identity of the detained individual has not been released. Law enforcement sealed off the area and launched an investigation. "Our detectives are working to learn more about the suspect and to understand why he came to the U.S. Capitol," stated Washington police.

Carrying firearms into the complex used by American lawmakers is prohibited.

According to Fox News reporters, bottles containing an unidentified liquid and several other items were removed from the vehicle. A dog traveling with the man was also cared for. The vehicle's license plate suggests the suspect may have traveled from Florida.

Authorities advised avoiding the area around the U.S. Capitol while the investigation continues. The duration of police operations remains unknown.

This marks the second such incident since the beginning of the year. In February, a man from Georgia attacked officers guarding the Capitol while holding a loaded shotgun. The aggressor demanded to "speak with a member of Congress."

In recent months, several congressional staff members were also stopped for attempting to bring weapons into the Capitol. Some lacked required permits, and at least two failed to report carrying pistols.
