A man trying to escape from Louisiana police after a suspected drunk-driving stop suffered arm injuries when an alligator attacked him in a marshy area, according to NBC News.

State troopers said the incident began Sunday on Interstate 10 in Jefferson Parish, where they received reports of a vehicle being driven recklessly. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Victor Rivas, crashed his Toyota into a concrete barrier while attempting to flee.

Officers observed clear signs of intoxication when they approached Rivas. While they were preparing to arrest him for driving under the influence, he ran from the scene. The man jumped from an elevated section of the highway into swampy terrain below. He was later spotted walking along Highway 61, but fled again into the marsh.

During this second escape attempt, an alligator attacked him, causing injuries to his arms. Despite being wounded, Rivas continued running. Authorities eventually located and apprehended him using drone technology.

Rivas was treated at a hospital for his injuries before being booked into custody. He faces charges for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, resisting arrest, and fleeing from Jefferson Parish.

Law enforcement officials used the case to issue a warning: driving under the influence can lead to serious and unpredictable consequences.
