Federal prosecutors in Chicago have unsealed charges against a teenager accused of participating in one of the most active cyber-extortion rings of recent years.
Peter Stokes, aged 19, was detained in Finland this past April after international authorities circulated an Interpol alert. He was subsequently handed over to American officials and appeared before a judge in Illinois this week, where he was remanded into custody pending trial.
The indictment accuses him of breaking into corporate networks, plotting with others, and defrauding victims. One specific episode outlined by investigators involves a premium jeweller whose systems were penetrated in 2025. The intruders allegedly sought roughly eight million dollars in cryptocurrency to withhold stolen information from publication. The victim firm expelled the attackers before any payment changed hands, yet the disruption still cost the business an estimated two million dollars in recovery expenses and lost operations.
American officials estimate that the broader network Stokes allegedly belongs to has extracted ransom commitments totalling well over one hundred million dollars from targeted organisations worldwide. The circle is understood to consist mainly of English-speaking individuals in their teens or early twenties, operating from bases in North America and the British Isles.
British law enforcement has taken a keen interest in the matter. The National Crime Agency suspects the same ring carried out the major data theft against Transport for London in 2024, compromising records belonging to some ten million commuters. Two men recently entered guilty pleas in that case. Detectives are also probing whether the group infiltrated systems at Co-operative Group and Marks & Spencer last year.
The operation to locate and seize Stokes involved cooperation between American agents stationed in Denmark and Illinois, alongside Finnish national police.
