Federal Agent Kills Man During Operation in Maine
A federal immigration agent gunned down a motorist Monday in Biddeford, a city in the U.S. state of Maine. Ryan Fecteau, who leads the local legislature, confirmed the death and ICE's involvement.
Advocacy organizations for migrants identified the deceased as a 26-year-old man from Colombia. They said he possessed legal work papers and a Social Security number in the United States. Relatives told the Maine Immigrants' Rights Coalition he was commuting to his job when agents confronted him. The family declined to identify him publicly.
Senator Angus King relayed information from federal authorities: the motorist was a young adult who had received a deportation order and allegedly tried to strike agents with his car. The agent opened fire, claiming self-protection. No recording devices were worn by the officers.
Governor Janet Mills acknowledged she had been briefed on the deadly encounter and said municipal police were assisting federal partners in reconstructing events.
Nearby business surveillance recorded the car moving through an intersection after gunfire. Images revealed the vehicle looping with a damaged windshield. Eyewitness Corey Poulin described agents rushing toward the scene while one colleague used an SUV to block the car's path.
The fatal shooting comes shortly after another immigrant died under similar circumstances in Houston, where a Mexican national was killed during an enforcement action. Both incidents have fueled demonstrations and renewed scrutiny of ICE's methods.
