Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian confirmed at a press conference that American citizen Min Zin has been subjected to compulsory criminal measures. The man stands accused of engaging in spy activities that endanger China's national security. Beijing did not disclose further details about the case but has notified the US consulate in Guangzhou.
According to AFP, citing a source professionally connected to the Myanmar Institute for Strategy and Politics (ISP-M), Min Zin was arrested on June 3 at Kunming airport in Yunnan province, which borders Myanmar.
- He went there for a meeting — another source close to the detained scholar told the agency.
A concerned family member reached out to American diplomatic services for assistance, another anonymous AFP source reported. Neither the US State Department nor ISP-M has responded to requests for comment so far.
The Myanmar Institute for Strategy and Politics researches politics, resources, and conflicts in Myanmar, which plunged into civil war following the 2021 coup. Its publications highlight Beijing's role along Myanmar's border regions.
Analysts note that China has sporadically engaged in the conflict, supporting both the military and rebels depending on its immediate interests.
