Nick Reiner, a 32-year-old screenwriter facing double-murder charges for the deaths of his mother and father in Los Angeles, has petitioned a probate judge to unlock money his parents set aside for him.

Reiner allegedly wants roughly $750,000 — half of a $1.5 million trust — to retain Alan Jackson, a well-known criminal lawyer, for his trial. Court filings by his legal team indicate the fund was meant to become available after he turned 30, with the rest disbursed at 35.

Jackson had initially taken Reiner's case right after the December killings in Brentwood but stepped away within weeks because the suspect lacked funds. A court-appointed defender has handled the matter since January.

Authorities charge that Reiner, who has dealt with psychiatric problems, stabbed his parents repeatedly inside their home. The slayings rattled the entertainment industry during the holiday season.

The double-murder case is expected to go before a jury in September.
