A teenage pupil at Deer Valley High School was critically injured when gunfire broke out in the campus parking lot following a Friday evening basketball match, reports ABC7 Bay Area.

The 16-year-old victim, who studies at the East Bay institution, was hit by three bullets and rushed to hospital, where he is fighting for survival.

The violence erupted after the varsity contest between Deer Valley and nearby Antioch High School had ended. As spectators streamed out of the gym, a sizeable crowd of young people began brawling outside. During the melee, someone opened fire.

One mother, Mary Montserrat, recounted the terrifying moment her daughter phoned her from the scene. She kept the girl on the line while driving to the rear of the building so they could stay connected amid the chaos.

A pupil named Rukundo Bindona said learning the news was deeply upsetting, adding that such conduct does not belong at school. Jean Carlo Padilla, a soccer trainer at the institution, stressed the importance of shielding young people, calling them society's next generation.

Law enforcement officials have not established what triggered the confrontation. The shooter or shooters have not been apprehended and are still being sought by police.
