A 28-year-old defendant charged with gunning down a healthcare company leader in New York City is expected at a pretrial session in Manhattan this week.

Houston Public Media reports that Luigi Mangione denies accusations he stalked and murdered Brian Thompson, who headed UnitedHealthcare until his death in late 2024.

The September start date for the state case has been set. Federal proceedings have been pushed to the following year.

Defence counsel has achieved some victories. Terrorism counts were thrown out by a state jurist in autumn 2025. A federal jurist also barred the government from pursuing execution.

Yet the state has also notched wins. Judge Gregory Carro recently greenlit the inclusion of a pistol, a sound suppressor, and a journal said to belong to the accused.

Court filings from federal prosecutors indicate the journal held pages of handwriting showing animosity toward the medical coverage sector and affluent business leaders. One passage allegedly outlined a scheme to "wack" a top insurance official.

Mangione's backers have channelled over $1.5 million into his legal expenses through more than 42,000 separate donations. His representative, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, has pushed back against portrayals of her client as an advocate for violent political action.

A guilty verdict on the surviving counts could result in a lifetime behind bars with no chance of release.
