Eight Shot, Including Four Children, at Coney Island Fourth of July Celebration
Eight people were wounded in a shooting Saturday evening in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn, New York, as the United States marked the 250th anniversary of Independence Day. Among the injured were four children aged 14, 12, seven, and six, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).
Officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 10:37 p.m. local time on West 31st Street. In addition to the four minors, two adult men and two adult women were struck. All eight victims were transported to hospitals. Seven are listed in stable condition, while a 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition, authorities said.
Investigators recovered a firearm at the scene. No arrests have been made, and police are continuing to search for the shooter and determine the circumstances that led to the violence.
The incident occurred during nationwide Fourth of July celebrations. It comes amid ongoing efforts by New York authorities to address gun violence, particularly in neighborhoods affected by gang activity. Just days earlier, a young rapper was fatally shot in the same Brooklyn area, with that investigation still open.
In May, Brooklyn prosecutors announced indictments against 15 individuals accused of terrorizing Coney Island and surrounding areas through a wave of armed violence. Investigators linked the group to 16 shootings over a 13-month period.
