The child, identified as Kohen Wiley, was inside the vehicle with his mother, Vellesiya Wiley, and another woman when police opened fire. According to the mother's account posted on social media, she lifted her baby to show officers he was in the car before shots were fired. "I raised my baby to try to show them he was in the vehicle. There were three, four shots. One bullet hit him in the chest. Another struck his arm and thigh. We went to the hospital where he was declared dead," she stated.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation offered a different version of events. According to the agency, the driver of the vehicle accelerated toward officers during the attempted stop, prompting one officer to discharge their weapon. The family of Kohen Wiley disputes this account.

The shooting has ignited protests at the scene of the tragedy. Demonstrators have condemned the police response, with some calling the incident racially motivated. "Shooting at a car when there's a baby inside, frankly it's ridiculous, it's unacceptable. It's necessarily because of his skin color," one protester told reporters.

Commissioner Sean Tindell, head of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, addressed the case publicly. He stated that the bureau would conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child's death. "I want to assure the public that the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will conduct its inquiry independently. Five agents are working on this case. They are gathering testimony and evidence," Tindell said.

The officer who fired the shots has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. Authorities continue to examine the events that led to the fatal shooting of Kohen Wiley.
