An immigration enforcement officer shot and killed a Mexican driver on Tuesday morning during a traffic stop in Houston, Texas, according to Le HuffPost.

The deceased has been identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, described by authorities as an undocumented Mexican national. ICE personnel were conducting a targeted enforcement action when they attempted to take him into custody. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the man struck an ICE vehicle, ignored repeated verbal commands, and used his car "as a weapon" while trying to run over an agent.

"Our officer discharged his firearm in self-defense," the DHS stated. The injured man was rushed to hospital where he later died from his wounds. Two separate investigations have been opened by the department and the local FBI field office.

The victim's son, Ronaldo Salgado, told Telemundo Houston that his father was starting his workday and looking to hire laborers when he was shot. Two workers traveling with him were also taken into custody by agents. In a Facebook post, the son paid tribute to a "hardworking Mexican" and wrote: "My father did not deserve this. He has lived in this country for nearly 35 years, working in construction to provide for me, my two brothers, and my mother."

This deadly encounter comes amid a recent surge in arrests carried out by ICE nationwide. At least six people have been shot and killed by federal immigration agents since January 2025, when President Donald Trump began his second term.
