A federal immigration officer shot and killed a Mexican man on Tuesday morning, 7 July, while carrying out a targeted arrest operation in Houston, Texas.

Officials named the dead man as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican citizen reportedly living in the country without authorisation. The Department of Homeland Security said agents were in the process of detaining him when he attempted to escape. According to the agency's account, he rammed an official vehicle, failed to comply with repeated orders, and tried to drive over one of the officers. The DHS stated that the agent fired in self-defence. Salgado Araujo was rushed to a medical facility but later died.

Both the DHS and the local FBI bureau have opened parallel inquiries into the shooting.

Ronaldo Salgado, the victim's son, offered a conflicting narrative to Spanish-language broadcaster Telemundo Houston. He said his father was beginning his daily work routine and seeking to recruit construction workers when agents opened fire. Two labourers who were with him at the time were taken into custody. On social media, Ronaldo described his father as a diligent worker who had spent almost three and a half decades in the United States supporting his wife and three children through building-trade employment. "He did not deserve this," he wrote.

The incident marks the latest in a string of fatal shootings involving federal immigration personnel. National data shows that no fewer than six individuals have died in such circumstances since the start of President Donald Trump's current term in January 2025, a period that has seen a marked escalation in nationwide immigration enforcement activity.
