A hostage situation at a California bank ended fatally when federal agents shot and killed the suspect following an overnight standoff, according to local law enforcement.

The incident unfolded at a multi-level Chase Bank building in Bakersfield, located roughly 110 miles north of Los Angeles. The suspect had barricaded himself inside with several hostages during the night.

Police initially responded to the location after receiving a bomb threat. All hostages survived the ordeal without injury.

During the standoff, authorities closed off Bakersfield City Hall, the police headquarters, nearby buildings, and multiple streets. Police negotiators maintained telephone contact with the suspect throughout the crisis. In addition to local police units, members of the FBI's hostage rescue team were deployed to the scene, according to CNN.
