Two sisters in San Diego County face first-degree murder charges after their 81-year-old mother died while trapped in a narrow space between a pull-out couch and a bed frame, where authorities believe she remained for at least 15 hours.

Emergency responders found Kun-Ying Yang unconscious shortly before midnight on March 6 in an apartment building on Genesee Avenue, according to Index.hu, citing People magazine.

Paramedics attempted to revive the elderly woman but could not save her. An autopsy determined she died from positional asphyxia, with neglect contributing to her death.

Investigators concluded that Yang's two daughters, 52-year-old Ingrid Wu and 53-year-old Rebecca Wu, were responsible for caring for their parents, who had become unable to look after themselves. Authorities allege the siblings failed to provide adequate supervision and care, endangering both their mother's life and the health of their 88-year-old father.

The sisters were taken into custody on June 4. Prosecutors have charged both with first-degree murder and elder abuse involving neglect. They are being held without bail at the Las Colinas women's detention facility in Santee.

Law enforcement officials noted that complaints about the parents' living conditions had been received previously. The investigation remains ongoing.
