Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates told a US congressional oversight committee that Jeffrey Epstein attempted to pressure him by threatening to reveal information about his extramarital relationships. Gates made the closed-door testimony on June 10 before the House Oversight Committee regarding his ties to the convicted sex offender.

According to the transcript released by the committee on Tuesday, Gates described what he called "veiled" threats. He stated that Epstein made suggestions indicating he would exploit information about Gates's affairs outside his marriage to force him to remain within Epstein's circle, even as Gates was trying to distance himself.

"He didn't blackmail me, but you know, as you look at those emails, it seems like Epstein was brainstorming in that direction," Gates said, referring to the Epstein files published in January.

When pressed further, Gates added: "He never sent me anything that I would call blackmail." However, he indicated that in draft emails that were never sent, Epstein appeared to be "testing out how he could blackmail me himself, but he never actually sent those messages to me."

The 70-year-old Gates released his opening statement on the day of the hearing, declaring he had no knowledge of Epstein's crimes and that he himself "never victimized anyone."

At the end of February, Gates told the Wall Street Journal that his association with Epstein was a huge mistake. He admitted to having extramarital relationships with two Russian women but denied participating in any of Epstein's activities in any form.
