A 38-year-old Brazilian citizen was arrested by U.S. authorities after escaping from the Federal Detention Center in Buffalo, New York, which is operated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The incident occurred in early June and was announced by the U.S. Department of Justice on Monday.

According to O Globo, Ernando Elias Orelio had been taken into ICE custody on June 1 following criminal charges of trespassing and assault. U.S. officials described him as a Brazilian national without legal immigration status who was being held at the detention center pending removal proceedings.

On June 7, staff at the facility notified the Department of Homeland Security that Orelio had escaped. Another detainee reported seeing him climb over a fence and reach the roof of the building. When agents checked his cell and the facility's yard, they could not locate him.

An agent then went to the roof and found Orelio, who jumped to the ground and ran away on foot, according to the Department of Justice statement. Despite the escape attempt, he was unsuccessful and was captured shortly afterward in a wooded area near the facility.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about security at immigration detention centers in the United States.
